Reality TV

In Jenkins article "Buying into American Idol" he describes the phenomenon that has become reality TV. Starting with the hit TV series Survivor and then American Idol. These shows have changed the context in which American broadcasting is operating (61). Jenkins says that consumer behavior is starting to shape programming and marketing strategies (61).

This is also taking effect in Belizean TV. They are adopting American TV and people are beginning to worry that cultures are going to be changed or forgotten due to TV.

TV has become such a huge part of American culture that it is slowly influencing other parts of the world and world leaders are becoming worried about the life of their cultures.

  1. I think that you are correct with our culture starting to change because it seems like our world is starting to revolve around TV. We get most of our information from it and it is hard to not see the influence that can have.

  2. Right, but remember what people like Malcolm Waters argue: reality TV may be imported to places like Belize, but does it have the same meaning as it does for people in the United States? A global culture, a common culture, does not necessarily translate into a homogenized culture. My suspicion is that Reality TV shows in other parts of the world in fact look very different from what we see on our TV screens, as Americans, just as the Latin American Telenovela is much different from the American soap opera model it was originally based upon.
